Russia
♦ Background
• Signed MOU with Khural village in the Maritime province of Russia on Feb. 23, 1997. The MOU was signed in order to invest capital in Russia’s land and North Korea’s labor to produce food for North Koreans.
• After a nationwide fund raising in November 1998, Saemaul leaders started to implement the project in full scale from January, 1999.
• However, we were not able to get the results we wanted and started projects such as cultural exchange, helping Korean Russians, regional development & income increase projects from 2000, which continued until 2005.

- farming (fruit and vegetables)
- breeding animals (pigs and ducks)

• Operation of Saemaul Center
- Induce Koreans and Russians to participate
- Support club activities
- Operate Korean classes, computer classes, and study rooms
- Support Korean brethren organizations

Sri Lanka
♦ Background
• Initiated the “Construction of New Village for Hope” project to help the tsunami victims in Sri Lanka. For this purpose, Saemaul leaders pitched in and raised a fund.
• Implemented “University Student Volunteers in Sri Lanka” project to resolve damages and conflicts

East Timor
♦ Background
• Saemaul Undong Movement was initiated in East Timor from 2002 on the back of proposals from the national assembly and related organizations.
• Various projects were implemented through the spontaneous participation of many Saemaul organizations

• Building community centers and fixing schools
• Building and supporting a powerhouses Farming tool supply
• Building pigsties and operating pig banks
• Experimental cultivation of crops
• Chicken ranch construction
• Village buses operation
• Goat banks operation
• Power generator construction
• Community store construction
• Seed supply
• Medication supply, Medical service for residents with fatal diseases

Philippines
♦ Background
• Responding to the request from “World Love Sharing Movement Center,” an organization in the Philippines that had been implementing Saemaul Undong Movement from 2001, the National Council of Saemaul Undong Movement in Korea started Saemaul projects in the Philippines.
• In the initial stage, Phillippine projects were solely done by our head office, but later expanded to various projects with the spontaneous participation of our branch offices.

Mongolia
♦ Background
• Saemaul projects were implemented in Mongolia from 2004. The projects were spearheaded on the back of the strong commitment of a local businessman, and the Mongolia Saemaul Center was established for this purpose.
• Saemaul projects are expanding to other areas in Mongolia, responding to requests from Mongolian regional governments and its residents.
• Currently implementing a three-step project: New Village Project (step1), 2006, Rich Village Project (step 2) 2007, Welfare Project (step 3) 2008.

Congo
♦ Background
• We had many countries asking us to teach Saemaul Undong Movement, but had not been able to do more than just prepare for International Saemaul Undong Movement due to distance and lack of professional experience. Congo Saemaul Undong was initiated in 2004 on the back of the active participation of a Congo student studying in Korea.
• Congo Saemaul project is being pushed forward to fit the country’s culture by Congolese.
• Congo Saemaul project is a three-step project: New Farm Project - My Farm Project- My House Project

Nepal
♦ Background
• Nepal is surrounded by land by four sides. This distant geographical location from the sea has limited trade with other countries.
• Biased wealth and the social classification system have been impediments to national development.
• Internal conflict between Maoist and the Nepal government has aggravated poverty situations.
• Poor health & sanitation service is another serious problem in Nepal

Cambodia
♦ Background
• The estimated agricultural household income in Cambodia is merely 0.75~1 USD per day (annual agricultural household income is 270~360 USD).
• Low agricultural productivity and agricultural income is related with the underdeveloped infrastructure and water shortage in the rural sector.
• Considering the current situation of rural communities in Cambodia, it is impossible to develop the rural sector without external aid. Thus, Saemaul Undong was initiated to provide clean water and inexpensive quality houses to villagers in order to eradicate poverty and improve living environment in Cambodia.
